GERONA LAUNCHES SEARCH FOR CLEANEST, GREENEST BARANGAY

In line with the municipal government's efforts towards sustainable solid waste management program, Mayor Dennis Norman Tanedo Go has launched the monthly search for the cleanest and greenest barangays in the municipality.

The project, which is in compliance with the provisions of the Solid Waste Management Act, aims “to give inspiration and challenge to all barangays so that they will continue to prioritize their program for
the environment.” It culminates in the giving of awards to winners during the town fiesta.

For the year 2009, the first-prize winner in the big barangay category was Barangay Tagumbao, which was followed by Barangay Buenlag and Barangay Abagon. They received P30 thousand, P20 thousand and P10 thousand, respectively.

In the small barangay category, the winners were Barangay Bawa (which received P30 thousand prize), Barangay Malayep (P20 thousand), Barangay Oloybuaya (P10 thousand), Barangay Sulipa (P8,000) and
Barangay Sta. Lucia (P5,000).

Another “green” project by the municipal government is the planting of trees by couples applying for marriage license.

“In line with this we will be supervising the activity through the municipal agrarian office to ensure that the trees being planted by newly weds will be taken cared of until they are fully grown,” Mayor Go said.
